Jo Hicks shooting for MegaStar

As promised I’ve once again dusted off my very large box of CD ROMs containing a lot of my work from the late 90s and early Noughties.

I remember this shoot very clearly, it was 11th September, 2001 at a little studio in Hackney, North London. What a surreal day – 9/11. Jo was getting texts from her boyfriend relaying what was happening in New York and we just couldn’t understand or believe what we were hearing. Like most people it was only later that day that we started to grasp what had happened.

The shoot, though, was great and I think these were possibly the best photos I ever did with Jo; her hair and skin are just glowing golden in some of these. I’d known Jo quite a long time from when she was shooting page 3 for the Daily Star and I was assisting the legendary photographer Jeany Savage. Jo went on to be a make up artist herself and spent a few years as Jeany’s MUA on the Star. I was also shooting Zoe McConnell that day too – she went on to become a photographer and shot for a lot of the ‘lads mags’ in their heydays. I’ll post the photos of Zoe at a later date – that was a pretty good shoot too!

These were shot for www.MegaStar.co.uk which was the first incarnation of the Daily Star on the internet.

I plan to be posting more ‘golden oldies’ soon, but in the meantime there are a few more sets from Megastar and Bravo TV if you look at the top of the page for ‘Megastar Archives” and choose from the drop-down menu there.

  1. A beautiful looking shoot…with a surreal story linked to it! My goodness, your camera really quite likes Jo!
